The number one priority in counseling is to "do no harm." I believe that if a counselor does not do what is in the client's best interest, there is potential to do further harm. In a divorced situation, countless studies show that parental involvement by both parents, even in situations of high conflict, is best for the child. In our experience, Kris Steinbeck agreed, with both biological parents present, that participation of both parents would be best for the child. Kris was provided with the parenting plan/court decree that displayed the father had not lost any rights to his child. The parenting plan states, "The names of both parents shall appear on all school, governmental, law enforcement, medical and health-related records, and both parents shall be provided access to all teachers, government officials, and doctors." After meeting with both parents together, it was the father's understanding that the child's appointments would alternate with each parent to avoid tension. Kris scheduled an appointment for the child with the father and then later, she allowed the mother to cancel the father's scheduled appointment without his knowledge claiming that the mother did not agree to the initial plan. The father was then told that the mother would be the only one permitted to schedule appointments. Kris allowed the mother to schedule appointments without the father's knowledge and consent. The father communicated with Kris Steinbeck on the date of the very first appointment explaining the situation, provided legal documentation, and had contact from his attorney. The father felt mislead, misdirected, and mistreated in this situation. In my opinion, Kris Steinbeck ignored legal, moral, and ethical obligations to her patient (the child). We have spoken with two other providers, both of which agree that this situation is not being handled correctly.
